Swissport Expands China Presence with Shanghai Pudong Smart Cargo Terminal

Swissport has strategically entered the Chinese market through a partnership with Smargo, a joint venture of AVINEX Logistics and China Eastern Airlines Logistics, to manage and operate the new Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). The state-of-the-art facility, covering approximately 222,000 sq m, is equipped with AI-driven warehouse management, autonomous vehicles, and advanced temperature-controlled storage, enabling efficient handling of up to 1.2 million tons of international cargo annually. Incorporating technologies such as 5G, big data, and AI, the terminal aims to automate cargo handling, improve customs processes, and provide real-time visibility, supporting Shanghai's goal to become a leading global aviation logistics hub. Swissport's CEO Warwick Brady highlighted the terminal's role in enhancing global connectivity and expediting Chinese exports to international markets by up to two days, emphasizing a long-term commitment to China's aviation sector. This launch represents Swissport's flagship operation in Asia and a cornerstone of its global air cargo strategy, leveraging its experience across 117 cargo stations worldwide to optimize trade pathways. The facility also targets specialized cargo sectors, including pharmaceuticals, with certifications for pharmaceutical handling, marking a significant advancement in China's air cargo capabilities.
