Two competing upgrade kits are emerging to transform the LEGO Game Boy set into a functional gaming device. Natalie the Nerd has developed the "Build a Boy" kit, which uses real Game Boy Pocket CPUs to play actual cartridges and offers versions ranging from drop-in no-solder kits to full DIY options, including a 2.7-inch display and rechargeable battery. In contrast, the BrickBoy kits by Substance Labs use emulation to play Game Boy ROMs without requiring physical cartridges, with options including grayscale and color support, Bluetooth audio, and rechargeable batteries, available through an upcoming Kickstarter campaign. While BrickBoy emphasizes ease of installation and features like adjustable lighting and wireless game transfers, Natalie's Build a Boy focuses on authenticity by utilizing original Game Boy hardware. Both kits aim to bring playable functionality to LEGO's Game Boy, but they differ in technical approach, user experience, and level of modding required.
