Collins Upsets Swiatek in Italian Open Third Round

Danielle Collins defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-1, 7-5 in the third round of the Italian Open, marking Collins' first win over Swiatek on clay and only her second in nine meetings overall. Swiatek, who has not won a title since her French Open victory last year, struggled with her serve and was broken six times. This loss ends Swiatek's dominant run at the tournament, where she had won three of the last four editions. As a result, Swiatek will drop out of the top three in the WTA Rankings for the first time since March 2022, raising concerns ahead of her French Open defense. Collins, who hit 32 winners to Swiatek’s 15, said her victory came from learning from previous close matches. She advances to face either Elina Svitolina or Hailey Baptiste in the round of 16.
