The controversy began when Waltz accidentally added Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg to a Signal chat where top officials discussed potential military actions against Houthi forces in Yemen. Although President Trump initially defended Waltz and denied that classified information was leaked, the incident strained relations within the administration and intensified scrutiny from lawmakers. Waltz publicly took responsibility for the mistake, calling it embarrassing and vowing to investigate, while privately acknowledging the accuracy of Goldberg’s reporting. Wong, also implicated in the leak and previously involved in U.S. diplomacy with North Korea, will depart alongside Waltz, prompting further shifts in the administration’s national security team.
