Illinois Man Sentenced for Hate Crime Murder

Joseph Czuba, a 73-year-old Illinois landlord, was sentenced to 53 years in prison after being convicted of the murder of 6-year-old Palestinian American Wadee Alfayoumi and the attempted murder of Wadee’s mother, Hanan Shaheen, in a hate crime attack days after the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023. The attack was motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment and triggered by Czuba's agitation over the Middle East conflict, leading him to stab Wadee 26 times and seriously injure Shaheen. Prosecutors emphasized that Czuba targeted the family solely because of their Islamic faith, presenting evidence including Shaheen’s testimony and a frantic 911 call. The case prompted a federal hate crime investigation and drew condemnation from national leaders, including President Biden. Community leaders linked the violence to dehumanizing rhetoric about Palestinians, heightening fear and anger among Illinois’s Palestinian American and Muslim communities. Czuba received consecutive sentences for murder, attempted murder, and hate crime charges, effectively ensuring he will spend the rest of his life in prison.
