Funeral of Cricket Legend Dickie Bird Held in Barnsley
The funeral for Harold Dennis "Dickie" Bird OBE, a legendary cricket umpire and Yorkshire icon, was held at St Mary's Church in Barnsley on October 19, 2025, followed by a private family committal. Bird, who passed away at 92, was celebrated for his illustrious umpiring career, having officiated 66 Test matches and 69 one-day internationals, including three World Cup finals. Barnsley Council facilitated the service with limited seating inside and speakers outside to accommodate the many fans wishing to pay respects, honoring Bird's wish for the funeral to be held on a weekend for wider attendance. The procession included a moment of reflection by Bird's statue, commemorating his lifelong ties to his hometown. Bird had been President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 2014, during which the club won two County Championships, and was recognized with an MBE and OBE for his contributions to cricket. Tributes highlighted Bird’s warm personality and lasting impact on the sport and community, with fans and notable figures alike recalling his charisma and dedication.
