1,500 Iran Ghezel Hesar Prisoners Stage Hunger Strike Against Surge in Executions
Prisoners in Ghezel Hesar Prison, one of Iran's largest prisons, have staged a multi-day hunger strike and sit-in protest against the surge in executions, triggered by the transfer of numerous inmates to solitary confinement ahead of their imminent executions. Reports indicate that at least 16 prisoners were moved into solitary confinement, with names including Ahmad Esḥaq-Zehi and others, prompting widespread protests involving up to 1,500 death row inmates across multiple prison units. The regime's intensified execution campaign, described by opposition groups as a tool to suppress dissent and deter uprisings amid internal crises, has resulted in at least 170 executions in less than a month, marking a level of brutality unseen since 1989. Prison authorities have attempted to quell the hunger strike through intimidation and promises to reduce executions gradually, but prisoners remain steadfast in their demands. The harsh prison conditions have been compounded by tightened security and closure of prison clinics, with at least one prisoner’s health reported to be in serious condition. International organizations and human rights groups are being called upon to support the prisoners and pressure the Iranian regime to halt the executions and address human rights violations.
