Hurricanes Sign Nikishin, Expect Playoff Impact
The Carolina Hurricanes have signed top prospect Alexander Nikishin to a two-year, entry-level contract starting immediately after his contract with KHL's SKA Saint Petersburg was mutually terminated. Nikishin, 23, served as captain for SKA, leading all defensemen in goals and ranking third in points, with 46 points in 61 games this season. Selected 69th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, Nikishin is SKA's all-time leader in scoring among defensemen and has gained recognition for his size and skill. He has also represented Russia, winning a silver medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The Hurricanes believe he will be an impactful player in the NHL and anticipate him playing a significant role in their upcoming playoff games. His contract includes a $185,000 signing bonus and a Conn Smythe bonus, indicating expectations for his contribution in high-pressure playoff scenarios.
