Fourth Suspect Arrested in Montgomery Mass Shooting
Montgomery police arrested a fourth suspect, 21-year-old Kemontae Hood, on Oct. 17, charging him with capital murder and multiple counts of first- and second-degree assault in the Oct. 4 downtown mass shooting that left two dead and 12 wounded. Authorities had earlier arrested 19-year-olds Dantavious McGhee (charged with capital murder and multiple assault counts) and Javorick Whiting (charged with attempted murder), plus an unnamed juvenile charged with capital murder and assault. Investigators say the gunfire erupted just after 11:30 p.m. near Bibb and Commerce streets in a crowded nightlife district after large nearby events, and that multiple people fired — with multiple weapons and shell casings recovered — and initial shots are believed to have targeted one person before others fired back. The victims killed were 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams; of the 12 wounded, seven are under 20 and the youngest is 16, with several initially listed in life-threatening condition. The investigation is ongoing, authorities say additional arrests are expected, and they are urging anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers, Secret Witness or the Montgomery Police Department.
