Deadly I‑10 Crash Spurs Licensing, Immigration Probe
Surveillance and dashcam videos show a semi driven by 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh allegedly plowed into stopped traffic on the I‑10 in Ontario, triggering an eight-vehicle pileup and fire that killed three people and injured others. Singh has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony counts, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI, and remains held without bail. Authorities allege he was intoxicated and did not apply his brakes, and investigators say video of the truck striking bumper-to-bumper traffic and igniting a chain reaction is central to ongoing criminal probes. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer, and federal and state agencies have opened criminal and administrative investigations into the crash and the circumstances of Singh’s immigration status and release. The U.S. Department of Transportation, led by Secretary Sean Duffy, said California improperly issued or upgraded Singh’s commercial driver’s license days after a DOT emergency rule limiting some noncitizen CDLs took effect and demanded remedial action; California pushed back, saying federal agencies approved or renewed his employment authorization documents and that states do not unilaterally determine CDL eligibility.
